Even coffee has gone environmental. More coffee manufacturers are now espousing organic coffee not only as healthy but environmental-friendly as well.What exactly does coffee have to be for it to be considered “organic”?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the agency that licenses whether or not a coffee farm can be categorically deemed as a manufacturer of organically-grown coffee via the following requirements:.
. No kind of synthetic or chemical pesticides or other restricted substances have been used for three successive years on the crop.
. A sustainable plan of crop rotation is implemented to avoid loss of soil nutrients and soil erosion.
. Bug prevention is done with a natural plan without the usage of anything artificial, chemical or synthetic.
. Any importation of coffee will go through testing and inspection before entry into the U.S., labeled and sold accordingly as organic.
One other label frequently discovered on organically-grown coffee states “bird-friendly.” To have approval of this label on a natural coffee product, the farmer/grower needs to have the natural shade or canopy of plants, not buildings or screens, in the cultivation of the crops, like plants. These plants are natural habitats of birds, hence, the “bird-friendly” label, and an option quick becoming popular with organic farmers / growers.

The absence of pesticide and chemicals and the promotion of bird-friendly environment are beneficial to the planet. There have been numerous recorded situations of poisonings among coffee laborers, particularly in conditions where safety equipment were not used when applying chemicals, pesticides, and other substances with potentially toxic content on the crops. The heavy usage of fertilizers containing nitrate on plants has also polluted the supplies of consuming water in coffee-growing areas.
There have also been reports on the inclusion of pesticides and chemicals which are on the crops when the coffee beans are roasted, meaning, you ingest some of those burnt pesticides and chemicals, as well, when you drink commercial coffee. And consuming them regularly for a prolonged time is liable to have adverse impacts on your health.
