I think it is safe to say that every women has an absolute favorite pair of flat shoes in their closet that can be worn every Spring and Summer Season and still look ageless and classy. Fashions and trends constantly change every year of course, but the time-honored style of the flat remains with us at all times.
Some Things I Am Sure You Never Knew About Flat Shoes
Flat shoes as we know them first became popular in the 16th Century and were called ‘pompes’ and were popular with both men and women they stayed in fashion until the 17th Century when high heels became all the rage.
The flat shoe stayed out of fashion until the French Revolution. When Marianne Antoinette went to the guillotine in a pair of heels the fancy for heels came to an ungracious end and humble flat shoe once again became all the rage.
Since that time the flat shoe, in a variety of forms has been in and out of style but the form of the flat shoe or ballet pump that we recognize and love today shot to the spotlight in 1957 when Audrey Hepburn looked very gorgeous in a pair with skinny jeans in the film ‘Funny Face’.
The shapes have changed but the basic flat shoe with a rubber sole has continued to show up on fashion catwalks across the world ever since.
Know Your Flats
Flats can be found in several styles:.
Ballet Flats:.
Probably the most preferred style. Low cut at the front, rubber sole and very flexible. These are a great emergency shoe to keep in your bag so if the glittering high heels you are wearing become just too excruciating you can just take them off and put these on.
The ballet Flat is a fashion basic. They can be dressed up and down and look fantastic with nearly every outfit.
Flat Court Shoe:.
Much like the ballet flat but a little more firm in structure and more coverage over the foot. Again can look good with nearly every outfit.
Clogs:.
These cover the toe and are often open at the heel but not always. These are a great casual look.
Boat Shoes.
More coverage over the toe portion of the foot and are fantastic with jeans and shorts especially in warmer weather.
What’s in This Year?
Every year things change slightly and this year is no different. This summer things are going pointy and strappy in comparison to the rounded ballet pump that was the must have of last year.
Socks or no Socks?
This is the six million dollar question, what socks do you wear with your flats? If you are super stylish or have the perfect body you can possibly get away with some knee high or ankle socks but for the most of us only no show socks ought to be worn.
You can buy no show socks for flats from most stores and Amazon.com, ensure to buy a pair that are good quality and fit your feet well. There is nothing more annoying when the socks keep falling off your foot.
Why Do We Like Them So Much?
No other footwear can rival the usefulness of the flat shoe. They look good with every outfit, you can even make the same pair look so different depending upon what you dress with it and they are comfortable and practical. What more can a girl desire? … (Well I could answer that but that is another blog post).
The humble flat shoe is never going to go out of fashion so if you are going to make only one shoe purchase this summer ensure that it’s a pair of cute flats.
