Overview of Como and Como Lake

The hills surrounding Como have been inhabited since the Bronze Age by Celtic tribes.

There are remains of the Celtic settlements on the hills in the South West of Como.

Around the 1st century BC the town center was moved to its current location by order of Julius Caesar and the newly founded town
was named Novum Comum.



Invaded by Charlemagne became a center of commercial exchange.
Around the 13th century, Frederick Barbarossa promoted the construction of several defensive towers around the city limits, of which Baradello still remains.


The history of Como followed that of Milano and known French invasion, Spanish and Austrians domination. Napoleon ruled Lombardy from 1796 until 1815. In 1859, became part of the Kingdom of Italy under the House of Savoy.

At the end of World War II, Benito Mussolini was taken prisoner and then killed by partisans in small town (Giulino di Mezzegra) facing Como Lake.



As a curiosity, the Rockefeller fountain that today stands in the Bronx Zoo in New York City was once in the main square by
the lakeside.

The wild fauna is prosperous and various: Stags, chamoises, some close to extinction species of birds are expanding again
including the royal eagle lakeside.



Como Lake is one of the deepest in Europe, 410 meters. With its big water mass it has a strong influence on
the climate, similar to the Liguria Coast region.
The area is famous for the Lake Como Villas, the incredible concentration of Romanesque churches that testify a flourishing
Middle–Age.
