Is Correct Spelling A Thing Of The Past

Do you know how to spell? I do and I don’t all wrapped up within me at the same time. How many times have I looked up the spelling of “ridiculous”? So many times it is ridiculous – spelled here the way I want it to be, just done and not verified in a dictionary!
I write a lot. Most of my writing is personal and business communication via email. The need to cross every T and dot every I, just so the reader doesn’t think I am an idiot makes me crazy. I don’t want it to be this way.
Fortunately, there is freedom from the dictionary on the horizon. That is because as more and more young people use mobile devices to send quick text messages to their friends, business partners and even their family members, the need for precision in ones spelling is becoming obsolete. I am pleased!
Yesterday, my 13 year old son wrote me a text message that tells me a lot about the direction that our written language is heading. He wrote:
“Mom, guna eat @ Peters 2nite. Ill B hom @ 9. C U L8TR Danny”
The trends are all there in this message. Brevity even in spelling is becoming the norm. The fewer the keystrokes, the better. Saves time and effort and it doesn’t harm the reader in any way. I must admit, I even enjoy the small amount of decrypting one must do to read this.
Lets take a look at another message, this one from my husband. Here he writes a personal message that I don’t mind sharing with you. He wrote:
“Huni, U wer so hot last nite. U had me goin and good. I want U and I want U now. Have 2 wait til tonite. dang!”
Wow! That message is just too good to be true. I don’t mind sharing it with you because it is completely true and it made me happy to receive it. Misspellings? Sure. Do I care about that? No. In fact, the misspellings give the message an appeal that cannot be denied.
So, proper spelling is going away and text messaging has its certain influence. I am happy about it and I hope you are too. Now, we don’t need to look up words like diarrhea when we get the runs. Just type dioria and you are done. That is the way it should be!
