Copywriting jobs and earning income copywriting are areas of growth that have echoed the rise of the internet and the massive development in opportunities for even ‘non-writers’ to earn money by copywriting.
Here are some copywriting job tips.
One of the first things you should try and do is build up a portfolio of your work – and to practise as much as you can.
When you work towards building a copywriting portfolio you are also developing your web copywriter skills and your confidence to go after the copyright jobs that can make you some serious money.
You might be thinking it would take forever to develop a web copywriting portfolio, but not so. There are ways you can build a web copywriting portfolio far faster than you might imagine.
The fact is when you look at the web writing for most businesses, it’s pretty darn bad. Look through competitive areas of business and try and see what’s different. You’ll frequently see some appalling copy, poor grammar, badly expressed ideas and – worst of all – a sameness.
Take lawyers, or dentists or accountants. You may think that they’re all selling largely the same sort of service and that’s largely correct. But do they all have to say what they do the same way? Do they all have to bore us with copy that has our eyes glazing over, or do they have copy that springs from the page and makes you sit up and smile, or connect with you emotionally, or provide a compelling reason why you should be seeing Dr Dentist for your gum problems, or the attorney Jones for your divorce.
Is there that x-factor that compels you to want to go there?
What a good copywriting job will do is take a critical look at a web page and decide how it could be better. Remember that most of them are put together by designers, not by copywriters. So you should pull them apart and rewrite the page. You can download a webpage if you like – use a program like Coffee Cup HTML editor to provide you with a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) web editor.
You can play around with the words to your heart’s content and if you rewrite it you can then show it to the business. Job done. You have rewritten a webpage and if you present it well, with a ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture and some good suggestions of how your words create the emotional connection I’ve explained above, or that you have a good call to action, or that you can build conversion rates, improve search engine optimization and so on – then you’re a champ.
You should do some homework finding out jobs that might suit your new career as a copywriter. You will be surprised at how many copywriting jobs there are, both where you can work from home and work from an office earning a great income in a fast-developing area.
