Is It Really Possible To Make A Living As A Freelance Writer

It’s tough to be a writer. At least that’s the myth that’s getting passed around as truth these days. Who’s passing this myth around? People who write for well known publications like the major newspapers and websites. Why are they passing this myth around? Who knows. Somebody said that because they don’t get paid that much, they’ve got to get some satisfaction out of it. Maybe by claiming that it’s super hard to become a paid writer, they feel better.
The truth is that it’s pretty easy to write for a living. That is, providing you’ve got a couple of skills. Obviously, this isn’t a no brainer, not everybody has these skills, or else everybody would be writing from home, and the economy would come to a screeching halt. Who would build stuff if everybody was writing?
Anyway, back on topic. One of these needed skills if you’ve got to be able to write decently. Not outstandingly, or extraordinarily, or even breathtakingly. Just decently. Just enough to communicate an idea without making the reader think, “What in the heck is this guy talking about?” And as I’m sure you are already aware, you are probably pretty good at writing down basic ideas. Or else you wouldn’t be here.
The next skill you need is persistence. Sadly, many people in society today don’t have this basic skill. We want our stuff right now. We don’t want to wait. We aren’t willing to put in any effort unless we are guaranteed we are going to get a certain result. If it doesn’t work out, we throw up our hands and say, “This stuff doesn’t work! What a rip-off! I’m going to sue somebody!”
However, if that doesn’t describe you, then you’re in luck. If you are willing to write something every day, publish it every day, regardless of whether or not you get paid instantaneously, then you’ve got what it takes.
All you’ve got to do is to start writing and publishing. On your blog. On article networks. On forums. The more you publish, the better you’ll get. If you just ramble on and never publish anything, you won’t get much better. Kind of like practicing basketball but never playing a game of pick up.
Pretty soon, you’ll feel confident enough to apply for some online jobs. There’s plenty of people out there dying to pay for content. Just show them your blog, or all your published articles, and you’ll get some jobs. Keep doing this, and you’ll get more jobs. Pretty soon, you’ll be making a full time income from home as a writer.
