5 Key Secrets To Killer Website Content

Content is King – okay, so you’ve heard that about a gazillion times. But it’s true! However, it isn’t only the content that makes a website great, and one that you want to “hang around” on for a while. The way the content is presented is essential; you don’t want to lose your visitor from the first paragraph! Have you ever come across a website or blog that looks as though there are a thousand words, with no sub-headers or even line breaks to make it readable? I have – and I leave the minute I see that it’s going to be difficult to read. Running sentences together down the entire page is NOT the way to attract an audience and keep them. But it is a good way to make your visitors go blind!
So what are the 5 killer secrets to creating great website content?
1. It’s value or usefulness. Why are people coming to your website, anyway? They sure aren’t coming just because they’re out of something to read. Your visitor is looking for something, whether that something is a product, service, information, answer to a question, etc. Give your readers what they’re looking for, and offer information in a way that makes your reader know that you’re an “authority,” or that you know what you’re talking about. Your reader wants to know that you’ve had experience with the same problem/need they have, and that you can steer them toward a solution.
2. Personality. Have you ever tried to write website content without being yourself? It’s hard, isn’t it? When you’re trying to come across as all business, it can kill your content. In most niches, it’s great to “go with the flow” and offer your own unique perspectives and advice, in your own voice. Be you – let your sense of humor come through occasionally, write as if you were talking face-to-face with a good friend. People like others they feel they can connect to.
3. Create your own sense of style. Today, too many websites pretty much just read like the others in the same niche. Set your style apart! Use multimedia, free offers, even survey your readers. Get them engaged. Discuss hot topics, even be a bit controversial. The point is, you want your website to stand apart from the crowd, so think of ways you can make it totally yours.
4. Make it easy on the eyes. Earlier in this post, I was talking about website copy that’s hard to read – no sub headers, line breaks, bold print, etc. When you make your web content easy to read, your visitors will love you for it! They can easily find what they’re looking for quickly, which is important as most people just “scan” your content, skipping to the portion that draws their eye or interest. Use subheadings, bold and italic type, bullets, etc. to help make your content easily scannable, and easy on the eyes.
5. SEO is good – but your pages must make sense. Unfortunately, too many websites are crammed full of keywords for the sake of SEO. However, this can end up turning the copy into complete garbage! Think of your visitor first, and write using a natural flow of words that make sense. Most of the time your keywords (and secondary, LSI keywords, etc.) will flow naturally into place without you having to give too much thought to them.
Keep in mind that you’ll NEVER make every reader happy. Some won’t like your personality, some won’t like what you have to say, others will even leave simply because they don’t like the colors or graphics on your site. You can’t please everybody, but with these tips for killer website content, you’ll sure capture the attention of your fair share of traffic!
