Socks are funny things and maybe not something most of us consider very often. They are odd items of clothing that we just put on our feet. Some people don’t bother with socks other people take sock fashion very seriously. Why do we use socks? Why should we wear socks? Here is a look as to why.
Why do we need socks? The answer is simple, they keep our feet healthy and here is why.
Our feet sweat. Some peoples feet sweat more than others but on average all our feet sweat approximately a cupful of water each day. Thats a whole lot of sweat . This is fundamentally the reason of socks to absorb this moisture.
If we don’t use socks, the moisture, having no place to go lingers in your shoe and this is detrimental in many ways:.
1. Having a barrier of a sock keeps your foot buffered and protected from outside elements, slightly like a condom for the foot. Wearing socks everyday will minimize dry feet and cracked heels.
2. Nasty fungal diseases. With no place to go this moisture will get warm as you move around and create more sweat. Bacteria loves dark and moist places which in the case of inside your shoe can manifest in forms such as Athlete’s foot and nail infections. As the fashion for wearing an increasing number of shoes without socks increases so are the sales in fungal foot medication.
3. Blisters and calluses. As your feet get hot and sticky they will start to swell and change shape which can make your previously comfortable shoes not quite so comfortable as your foot rubs against them creating painful and unsightly blisters and calluses.
4. As your puffy feet rub against your shoes the shoes start to stretch and change shape. This makes your shoes look well-worn and mis-shapen far more quickly than if you used socks. Simply using pantyhose does not always prevent this.
4. Finally but far from least there is the odor. With no sock to soak up the warm moisture and as the bacteria begins to breed, that all too familiar foot locker smell begins to form. This not only makes your feet smell but also can transfer to your shoes and although there are numerous products on the market to get rid of this, it can be very difficult to get rid of and be very embarrassing.
So socks are not just an unnecessary fashion accessory they are an essential component of personal health and hygiene. If you don’t feel that socks look right with your outfit then wear no show socks.
One of the first things any podiatrist will tell you to keep your feet healthy is to wear socks and hopefully now you realize why.
