Copywriting Tips – Is Copywriting Software Worth The Investment

If you’re a copywriter, new or old, you’ve probably seen lots of software that will analyze your copy for you and tell you how good or bad it is. A lot of people ask me if this software is worth the investment. Well, there is no one answer to that and in a minute I’ll explain why. If this sounds surprising, it shouldn’t. Once you hear the answer, you’ll understand why it isn’t as cut and dried as some would like to think. So if you’re ready for some hard hitting truth about copywriting software, keep reading.
Okay, here is the statement and then after I make it and you’re blown away by it, I’ll clarify it for you. Copywriting software is only as good as the person who is using it. Did you get that? If not I’ll repeat it so that it’s clear in your mind. Copywriting software is only as good as the person who is using it. Okay, now that you’re totally confused, let me explain as clearly as I can.
Let’s for argument sake say that somebody who is just starting out and wants to be a copywriter gets some software that will analyze his copy and tell him if it’s good or bad…line by line. Okay, sounds pretty good on the surface, right? Certainly this has to help. However, what if the person has no copywriting experience at all and for that matter doesn’t even have any training? He has no idea what makes up a good headline or any part of sales copy for that matter. Unless he is incredibly talented, what do you think his chances are of coming up with great or even good copy? Pretty slim, right?
Okay, so he creates his headline and the software comes back and gives it a score of 10. And let’s say a decent headline score that is at least passable is about 40. What do you think this person’s chances are of increasing that score to anywhere near 40 with no training? Do you think he’s going to have any real chance at all? My guess is, probably not. Sure, by trial and error he’ll improve his score only because with each attempt the software will reanalyze his headline and eventually, at least you hope, he’ll come up with something better than a 10.
Now, take that same software and put it into the hands of somebody who has a decent grasp of copywriting. Now, when THAT person enters in a headline and gets an initial score of say, 30, there is a much better chance of that person coming up with a score of 40 or even higher within a few revisions because he already knows the basics of copywriting. Do you see the difference between using software when you’re just starting out and when you’re already fairly experienced?
Ironically, the software will be or more use to those who really need it the least because they are the ones who will get the best results. Those who need it the most, the ones just starting, the ones who have no formal training, they’re the ones who will see limited results with it UNTIL they get a solid foundation under them.
