I hope you are well on your way to becoming a freelance copywriter… just messing around with affiliate offers, creating landing pages and simple sales letters to drive traffic to offers that convert. It is that simple.
The direct response sales letter method works (it brings in results) better than anything else, just because… your prospects do not get distracted!
Today I want to answer the age-old question… should my copy be long or short?
Since this is the Internet, you have no limitations on your sales letter. You do not have to pay for anyone to print anything out, so your sales letter can be 5 pages… 10 pages… even 100 or 300 pages long, as long as it explains it all.
You need to capture attention and build desire. You need to explain what you’re selling. You need to hit on the important benefits — people are always interested in what is in it for me. What’s your solution to THEIR problem… did you explain the problem?
You need to tell people why it’s in their best interest to buy… overcome common stumbling blocks that hold people up before they hit that order button… make people believe they are “trading up” … show how your offer is more valuable to them than the price they will pay for it.
Show proof!
That is a lot of information to give. If you’re stuck with writer’s block at the moment, look back at your sales letter… do you have all of those elements?
The only time sales copy is too long is if there’s a few boring sentences and you lose the interest of your readers, and they click away. That means it’s time to edit that part out. But if people read from start to finish, all the way down… and understand all the paragraphs, bullet points and headlines… it doesn’t matter how long it is, just enough to do the job!
It’s not like where people see the word “McDonald’s” or “Pepsi” and you instantly know everything about it. You have to introduce people to your product and make a case why you are the best… you are kind of like a lawyer trying to convince a jury to vote guilty or not guilty. But this time… you want your jury to vote “order.”
Get back to writing some ads… headlines… sales letters… just try something, write it, and send a little bit of traffic to it (PPC, article marketing, list building, forum marketing) and see what works.
