I just passed the halfway mark of a writing contest that I am taking part in. Essentially I have to write a certain amount of articles in a certain amount of days. I had always planned to write an article about my thoughts at the halfway point. So here it is…
I started the competition off behind the eight ball because I only began writing a couple weeks ago. I don’t mean in general, I mean for the competition. It has been running since May but I didn’t notice until nearly the end of June.
I will admit there have been moments over the past couple of weeks where I spent time looking at a blank computer screen trying to think of what to write. I realized the easiest thing to do was go about my daily routine and when inspiration struck, then I write. So far I would have to say it is a pretty worthwhile endeavor.
One of the best benefits has been the effect it has on my writing. It really helps to sharpen your skills. You can tell when you read through your article and you only have to do half the editing you did when you started. I find myself writing quicker as well, and not struggling to think of the perfect word. Writing is like any skill, it really takes some time and practice to master.
Like everyone else I love the traffic that articles provide, and there is another benefit. I am constantly driving super targeted traffic to my money site. I haven’t been getting an overwhelming amount of URL clicks, but the people that do visit the site have been converting at a whopping 70%! These aren’t sales mind you, but sign ups for my mailing list. I have a great offer so that helps of course, but I need to send people there to see it. This competition has definitely helped with that.
The final benefit I want to touch on is the feeling of community that a competition like this can create. I have connected with a couple people on twitter that are doing the same challenge. We can share frustrations, triumphs and motivate each other. If you ever find yourself lost for ideas, check out Twitter, you are certain to find help somewhere.
This is my first article contest and I am only halfway through, but so far so good! I started late this round, but I am sure I will try again next time, and I will make my goal twice as hard. If you really want to take your writing to the next level, then enter an article writing contest.
