The Art Of Writing From Within

Like any creative endeavor, the art of writing is drawn from within. An artist uses their mind’s eye to imagine what they will draw. A pianist concentrates on the sound of each key, while a writer has to call upon all their senses in order to create a scene on paper.
Most writers pull from personal experience to achieve the most realistic account of their characters feelings, while others can imagine what that might be. Putting those thoughts and feelings down on paper is meant to offer the reader a visual scene of the dramatic action on each page, with the precision of a motion picture screen. Every color, sound, and described detail should enhance this picture. In other words a creative writers job is to bring life into their characters by first mentally creating them, in their own imagination.
Like actors in a play, for a moment in time, they speak their characters’ lines, picture their actions and process their emotions. Sometimes, actual tears may fall or the emotion of anguish or elation can be physically felt. It is the process a writer experiences to create the greatest impact for their creative work.
No matter what the content of the story, a writer must be a good storyteller. Someone who breathes life into the very words they write. This is a responsibility, a demand and a gift to our readers. Everyone who enjoys picking up a book and getting lost in the story most likely can relate to what I am talking about.
Reading, like watching a movie gives us a chance to escape the stress and problems of our own lives. As writers we hope to draw you into the story and whisk you away to experience a new and different place, time or event.
Personally, I found greater understanding in this process while studying to be a Hypnotherapist. In 1985, I graduated from The Hypnosis Motivational Institute in California and completed an internship working with cancer patients. Through the power of visualization, using hypnosis, I directed the patient to create his own set of tools for fighting the disease. This offered them hope and a feeling of control because they used the power of their own minds to direct these tools for healing and lowering the pain. My sessions were created after they completed a symbol association questionnaire, which identified these tools.
I believe hypnosis, like meditation, can open our minds to positive results when directed visualizations are described to the person. This is because while someone is under hypnosis, sleeping or meditating, our mind and body experience these imagined scenes as though they are real.
While writing I have been inspired by a true story and I worked hard to express the depth of emotion of my characters. The characters’ struggle with pain and trauma was personally felt when my son died in a tragic automobile accident. Faith and hope helped me decide to be a survivor. I learned that it’s not what happens to you in life, but how you deal with what happens, that can make a difference.
Anyone who puts words down onto a document is a writer. You participate in the art of writing when you complete a letter, book/article, poem, E-mail or text.
As a writer my hope is that my work will offer something inspiring to my reader’s personal journey.
