Copywriting Tips – Consistency

Consistency…a word that a lot of people have trouble even understanding, let alone achieving. There is an old saying that any hack can come up with a great sales page once in a while. The key to being a great copywriter is consistency. The question that we’re going to try to answer in this article is just how do you achieve that kind of consistency where every sales page that you write turns out to be a winner. If you’re curious, keep reading. The answer might surprise you.
The key to consistency is no magic button. But it’s something that many beginning copywriters have a problem with. That key is finding a voice for your copy and then writing up a checklist of items to include in each copy you write that compliments that voice. If this sounds a little cryptic right now, hang in there. I’ll explain the best way I know how…with an example.
Let’s say that you feel your best skill as a writer is your sense of humor and your ability to tell stories. If that’s the case, then what you should do is construct each sales letter that you write in such a way where you begin the copy, after the headline of course, with a story and that sense of humor. People who read sales copy love stories, especially if those stories suck then right into your life, or the life of the person you’re writing the copy for. Nobody can resist a good story.
After that…after you have them sucked into your copy…the rest is simply following the steps of writing good copy, such as including bullet points, testimonials and so on. Naturally, you want to make sure that what follows your intro makes sense. You don’t want to throw things in at random. You want to make sure that the items you include in your copy…and here is the important key…the order of these items, remains consistent with every sales letter you write.
What this ends up doing is it gets you into a rhythm so that when you do write your sales letter, you don’t have to think about what you’re doing. Of course you’re going to carefully think out your words, but you won’t do it with all that extra baggage of having to think about what order you’re going to put things in and what voice you’re going to use. That should all be decided beforehand.
Naturally, some copy has to be more serious than others, such as if you’re writing copy for health products, but for most items, you can use the same voice and have no problems.
