In the ocean of different video formats, it is not always easy to play a particular movie. You double click a video file and simply get the message that the corresponding codec is missing from your system, whatever that means. Now the trick is in finding out where to get and how to install the missing codec, even if we do not care much what it is.
Fortunately, there is no need to do that, as we can download and install a smart little program like Free Video Player instead. As its name suggests, the program is a completely free software player. Other than that, it does not say much, but we can always give it a try and discover what hides behind the simplistic name.
Free Video Player turns to be a quite powerful and accomplished video player that supports about 40 video formats. It can easily play MKV, AVI, WMV, DVD (with DVD menu), Blu-ray, TS, MP4, and many other formats. The word “easily” is not accidental here, Free Video Player will not send you searching for codecs, as its setup package already contains all necessary tools to play the supported formats. Furthermore, the player works very fast and at the same time delivers high-quality picture, which is an amazing combination. A good example is provided by MKV files, as they are typically bigger than movie files in other formats. Where other MKV player programs get up steam to start playing such files, Free Video Player already shows the picture and allows to fast forward or rewind the video without delays.
The player supports skins. All necessary controls are easy to access: there are buttons for switching between audio tracks and subtitles, for making a snapshot, etc. Each button responds to left and right clicks with different actions: with a left click you can easily select an audio track or load an external audio track, while a right click will open a window with advanced settings for audio, including an equalizer, an amplifier, and other useful tools. If you discover that the selected audio track does not match the video (for example, sounds come earlier or later than required), you can simply adjust timing in this window.
In just the same way, the free video player can work with subtitles, load external subtitles from a file, synchronize subtitles with video, even use subtitles created for a video file with a different FPS value.
The settings menu of the video player gives us more insight into its functionality. We discover that keyboard and mouse actions can be easily reprogrammed, we can set the default display for the full screen video mode and choose the default audio device. The player also supports WinLIRC, which can be helpful if you have an IR receiver device on your computer: using the WinLIRC capabilities, you will be able to control Free Video Player with your IR remote.
Free Video Player can also play various audio files, it supports over 35 audio formats and can work with playlists. By the way, when playing videos, the player can open files with similar names from the same folder automatically. Thus, if you have a movie cut into two files, Free Video Player will play it completely, even if you open only the first file.
Taking into account its speed, features and picture quality, Free Video Player is a “must have” for everybody who needs to play videos on a PC.
