Hoboken, NJ lies on what was once an island, and even today many areas of the city lie below or near sea level. This can cause serious flood issues for some residents. EmNet Sensors
The City has worked with a data collecting agency called Emnet to install sensors in manholes around the city to collect data on flooding. This initiative is collecting data to tell the city more about problem areas, how flooding affects the sewage system, and what areas need more pumps or flood control. Mayor Dawn Zimmer of Hoboken and the North Hudson City Sewage Authority are spearheading these ongoing efforts to help keep the city safer. The Mayor has also requested FEMA grants since Hurricane Sandy to be able to install new flood pumps in the area, as Hoboken currently only has one operational flood pump. Many residents agree that this is just not enough to control the serious flooding problem that the area has faced for years.
Overnight Parking
If you are concerned about overnight flooding, the City also offers parking at the low rate of $5.00 from the hours of 8 PM to 8 AM in Municipal Garages B and D, which are located in the Midtown Area. Although day rates for these garages are the same, it’s a good option for protecting your vehicle if you live in an area that may be flooded often. If the National Weather Service in the area issues a flood warning, residents with a valid parking permit can park their cars for free in Municipal Garage B.

The City’s website provides lots of useful elevation and tide flow maps to check and see if you are in an area of Hoboken that is prone to flooding. These maps not only tell you where you should be cautious in the city, but also provide residents with information about insurance rates.
