Sometimes there is a benefit in knowing a little about a lot, then a lot about a little. When it comes to Niche website design, it’s never more important, then when you ask yourself, do I build a small 5 – 6 page niche sites with a limited number of posts about a very narrow subject, then move onto replicate that with multiple other smaller sites, or do I build one large site, about the total subject matter on hand, and dominate it, by including as much information about that one subject as I can. So you’re really asking yourself is it a Small Niche verse large Authority site.
Well, I wish I had the answer for you, there are plenty of people out there killing it with small niche sites, you have the likes of Niche pursuits and Empire flippers to name a few.
I found it very hard, when I started out, I had so many ideas that I just kept putting up new websites, with no real clue or focus about what I was doing. I think that some of my ideas were great, some were pretty average and somewhere just plain DUMB. I mean as a 30 something male, why would I want to put up a girl gossip site. Seriously, if I pay more than $17 for a haircut, I am pissed off, so why would I want to try to give advice about women paying $200 for a haircut.
As I have gone along the make money online with website’s path, I have come to realise, that there are 6 main areas you need to consider before staring a website.
DEFINING YOUR PURPOSE
Now I don’t mean spiritually, you know why are you on this planet, but the real purpose of what you are doing online.
1. Are you creating small niche sites, maybe you want to flip them as well (Check out Empire flippers).
2. Are you creating large authority sites check out Pat Flynn’s, Security Guard Training website.
3. Are you freelance writing online – check out Tom Ewers Freelancing Writing site.
4. Are you creating Amazon product review sites? – check out Chris’s Guthrie’s Make money on the internet site
5. Are you creating your own blog site about your passion – Check out John Bardos’s site Jetsetcitizen or Steve Buchanan from Stevespersonaltraining.com
6. Are you selling Products in a E-shop or Ebay
7. Are you developing your own products.
You get the picture, that list is not complete either, there are plenty of other options you can try inmaking money online. But you need to start with defining your purpose for yourself. Oh, and keep in mind that where you start is probably not where you will finish, but START regardless. You need to pick one thing that you are going to do online, and then work at it.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MONETISE IT
I think just about everyone these days is looking to make a little extra money, so blogging or niche website creation has become a very popular thing to do. Some people have even replaced their 9-5 working income, which I think is awesome (and I am still to do).
Once you’ve defined your purpose, you need to marry that up with monetising your site. There are plenty of different ways you can monetise your website.
1. AdSense
2. Affiliate marketing
3. Selling your own products.
4. Selling some oneelse’s products
5. Drop shipping
6. Advertising revenue
Just to name a few, the important thing here again is to pick some where to start, you will find as you move along, that new opportunities will pop up and you can learn them and add them into your money making arsenal.
NO TRAFFIC NO MONEY
You can build the world’s best website and unless you get traffic to it, you have got no chance of making money. YOU NEED CUSTOMERS (visitors to your site), think about the biggest shops or shopping centers in your area, if they all of a sudden stopped getting customers walking in their doors every day, they won’t have a business for long, would they? It’s that same with your website, unless you have traffic to it, then you are royally screwed, and won’t make a cracker.
So, think about traffic, and how you will generate it, and I include social media in that thought as well. There are plenty of free sources to refer to online to learn about SEO, LINK BUILDING, SOCIAL MEDIA e.t.c, please don’t go and spend a crap ton of money on some bullshit course that tells you, that you can have 1 000 000 visitors every day, if you just smear peanut butter on your head. (Trust me, you will get about the same benefit out of doing that and their course).
You would be better of spending money on programs like Ultimate Demon, that can actually be used to do the practical work, then money on a course that can tell you how to do it.
MAILING LISTS
This point isn’t so important if you are only building a small niche site, but hugely important if you are building an authority site. To the uninitiated a mailing list is where you collect people’s emails, then once a week or month (or how often you like), send them a email promoting something on your site with with links back to your site.
It’s about getting in front of people’s faces as much as possible. So you write a new post, maybe reviewing a product (with affiliate links of course), then send out an email with links back to that new post. There are plenty of Email Management programs out there, like Mailchimp, or Aweber. I use mail chimp as its free for less then 2000 emails per month.
But my advice here is start a list sooner than later, it will help you greatly on the way to replacing your 9 – 5 work income.
TRACK IT AND TWEAK IT
It is dead set easy, to get analytics on anything online, So make sure you put tracking on your website, the easiest to use is Google analytics and its free. Once you start to get regular traffic you can start to see patterns forming. When you see the patterns forming, you can start to see what you need to do to tweak you site to get more from it.
RINSE AND REPEAT
Going back to point 1, work out what you are doing, then monetise it, building traffic to it, mail it to your fans. Hopefully by this stage you should be making a few bucks. Then RINSE AND REPEAT it, again and again.
It’s unlikely you will make $10 000 a month from 1 website, but you might make it from 5 or 10 websites. My point here is small bites will add up into big mouthfuls. Just keep doing what you know is working and build on it
So there they are, my 6 key points for building a online web empire/
