Seo Blog – Commenting measures – open source links

Here is a little used way to get links from networks that are highly trusted in Google.

The only negative thing that I can say about this technique is that these links are coming from networks that won’t have much to do with the theme of your site, but getting a link from networks with high page ranks and trust can still help out from the testings that I have conducted.
For example, in late 2009 Propeller (previously called Netscape.com) had a Google toolbar page rank of 9 out of 10, so this is an extremely high number.

I would constantly take advantage of this and landed on the FrontPage of this network time after time (which I will explain how to do in the third chapter of this protect) and my rankings would literally shoot up to the top in Google for competitive keywords within hours.

Even though Netscape was not within the same theme of my site, that one link from that high page ranked network still helped out tremendously. So, the good thing is that open source communities are established and aged authority sites within Google, and a link from an authority site is not going to harm you.

However, by no means should you focus the core of your marketing efforts within these networks, you are far better off spending time in niche related forums because if they allow you to enter a signature and include the follow attribute, then not only can it give you free back links, but it can also give you additional free targeted traffic.

The list that I will provide you with shortly is a compilation of the top open source content management systems with some other applications thrown in there.

Most open source applications websites in general work very similarly.
What happens is that when you visit the homepage it will display some information about the application and then somewhere on there it will prompt the individual to download the software, and once they do so they can use the support forum to “post” any questions, concerns, bugs, or feedback that they may acquire about the software.

So, this is where the link building process comes into play. Once you register and activate your account on the forum of the network you can then “edit” your profile. This will then require you to add some personal information about yourself such as your likes, hobbies, contact information, and personal preferences that you may want to set.

In addition, there should be a spot in which you can add your personal website url. This will automatically give you a quick back link and then you can add your website url in your signature as well.
Whenever you are adding your website url I would recommend that you put the enter http:// prefix before the www because most of these networks will require you to input it in that syntax or less it will show some type of error.

Following are the popular open source networks that you can register at and then enter in your website details within your profile.

GREAT, I have just listed some of the most popular open source applications out there on the internet. If any open source application is really popular then it will definitely need a support forum in order for the developers and owners to solicit feedback from their products.

If it has a support forum and is also a rapidly downloaded application then overtime it will become an authority site… that is virtually guaranteed. This means that this can equal an easy way to attract links from high authority sites. The great thing is after you have established your profile on
these networks and joined in on some discussions with a signature link, you can always look for more open source applications if these still aren’t enough links for you.

There are a vast variety of open source programs out there but I tend to focus on the bigger applications to try and make the best use of my time. However, there could be some popular open source technologies that have active support forums that I could have overlooked so what I would recommend is that whenever you be data mining in the search engines, to always keep an excel sheet open and input any new discoveries that you may come across while you are surfing on the web.

I would also recommend finding the forum threads that have the highest concentration of posts and views and then post in them with your signature link. These type of threads the search engines love and they eat these up in their system (remember, search engines love content, it is a delicacy to them) and if you join in on the conversation within these threads then it is very likely that the search engines will gobble up your site and index it rapidly.
With this method it is very easy to build back links from sites that have both, a whole lot of page trust built up in Google, and also a crazily high page rank. Not bad for just five minutes of data entry on each network! Gotta love it.
