However prolific a writer we are, however many books we’ve published, however many thousands of words we’ve written, we all need techniques and systems in place to be able to continue to write to the best of our potential abilities.
If your approach to writing has no structure or routine, then it’s unlikely you’ll ever reach a fraction of your creative writing potential.
Here to inspire you and get you started then are 5 top creative writing tips:
1. Use an Ideas Journal. How do you currently store ideas for your creative writing projects? What? You don’t?? Many of us do exactly the same and wonder why we’re always scrabbling around for a half interesting idea to write from.
The secret is to capture your ideas when they come to you, not expect them to appear at the perfect moments. Carry a small notebook with you wherever you go and jot down those ideas as they occur. Then when you sit down to write you’ll have pages of inspiring material ready to be developed.
2. Read widely. One of the best ways to write better is to read more widely and expose yourself to a variety of different writing styles, techniques and topics.
If you always read the same kind of books or magazines or articles, your writing will become similarly limited. Read a diverse range of material, learn what you like and what you don’t like, and it will naturally find its way into your writing and help you reveal your true writing potential.
3. Write about what you want to write about. There’s not point slogging away at a highly challenging writing project, or worse still at something you find completely dull and uninspiring. You simply won’t enjoy it.
Instead, write about what you want to write about, and write in the way you want to write, however unconventional, or conventional, that may be. When you write for the pure enjoyment of writing, you’ll create your best work as well as evolving more naturally into the writer you’re truly capable of being.
4. Join a writing group. There’s only so much you can do alone. Joining a supportive group of other creative writers works in two main ways. Firstly you’re able to share your own work, get feedback and encouragement, and feel less like you’re creating in a complete vacuum.
Secondly, you’ll be able to support others writers who are experiencing the same kind of triumphs and struggles that you are. Knowing that your support helps someone write that little bit more, and that little bit better is tremendously rewarding and motivating.
5. Write everyday. The secret to any kind of consistency in writing is to write every day, not just when you feel like it, or when inspiration hits you. Set a time of day that you think will work best for you and commit to writing for a minimum of 15 minutes at that time for 14 days.
At the end of this period, review what’s worked, make any adjustments you need in the time of day you write, or the length of time you write for, and set off on another 14 days. The positive difference on your writing – and how easy you find it to write – will be dramatic.
Pick one of these tips and put it into action today.
Once you’ve mastered that, introduce one or two of the others. Follow them all and you have a recipe for becoming the consistent creative writer you know you can be, as well as enjoying your writing more than ever.
