An Eternal Symbol of Summer, the Espadrille Shines!

With it’s rope-lined sole and canvas upper, the espadrille shoe gains more and more fans every summer. We love their authentic, provincial aspect, but we especially love their amazing comfort. With their growing popularity, designers have now created espadrilles in all shapes and colours to seduce the public. Here are a few designer brands that have made the espadrille their flagship model.

1789 Cala is a recent brand founded in 2010 by Damien and Julian near Nice, France, with the intention of modernising the espadrille. Designed and manufactured in France, the 1789 Cala espadrilles feel like holiday in the south! Their unique logo: a small emblem with the colours of France on each model. Along with a traditional collection of espadrilles available in 24 colours, their designer collection offers well-researched urban models that still have a rope sole and woven hemp upper, in keeping with the spirit of the style.

Designed in Biarritz and manufactured at the foot of the Pyrenees in the province of Soule, the creations of Art of Soule invoke the warm sun and the ocean. The concept of this French brand? To relook the espadrille, a traditional peasant shoe, into a real fashion accessory. Colorblock, prints and multi-coloured, the 2011 version of the espadrille is environmentally friendly with natural materials, but also very modern thanks to the reworked design. Lightweight, comfortable and truly legendary, this symbol of rural idleness will be our must-have for summer.

Based in France since 1935, the brand Pare Gabia (“unparalleled” in the Basque language) revisits the traditional espadrille to give it new life. Hand sewn, this legendary shoe gains height and style to adapt to current fashion trends. In addition to becoming the standard in the world of canvas and rope shoes, Pare Gabia is now synonymous with the natural sophistication of the French, all over the world.

La Cadena was created in 1836 in Munilla, Spain. Founded by two brothers, Don and Don Manuel Santiago, they quickly created a solid reputation for shoes. Today, the company continues the tradition of its founders while continuing to innovate. To create models adapted to the needs of consumers, the Spanish brand combines their ancestral expertise and modern techniques. La Cadena creations are always well-loved for comfort, but also for style.
