Whether this website copy is for your web page, sales letters, blog post or online press releases, the concepts are consistent.
Well written copy will help you sell more of your product and /or service, and attract more prospects for your home business.
Website Copywriting Tips For Any Website Copy
Having your content tightly focussed and centred on the subject matter has two distinct advantages:
1. It helps you keep your mind focussed on the problem area you intend to cover, thereby helping you produce better quality content
2. It helps you attract, retain and maintain better quality prospects who know exactly what they want and what problem they want solved, and whose problem is solved by you.
Get your thoughts and material organized; know what you’re going to write about, and in what order. In the long run, it helps you write faster and again, attract and retain better quality prospects whose time you are not wasting.
Make your message interesting and say all you have to say. And don’t worry about length – keep it long enough to cover all
relevant points. If you write in the manner I will outline below, a reader will not find your copy too long, and it will still cover all the points you want to put across.
Which Problem Does Your Copy Eradicate?
Do you know what our potential prospect’s major problem is? Knowing this problem helps you focus your content or sales letters.
When you have conducted your market research, you will have a clear understanding of the problems that your prospect wants solved.
Your competition can also aid in this market research process. By reviewing what they are doing (that’s working for them), and the problems they are solving, you also get an insight into the kind of problems your potential market is facing, and therefore which you should be writing about and solving.
The key in writing good copy is to understand your target market.
When you know your potential prospect and their problem, and speak to them in direct terms of their problem (or its solution), you have a greater chance of connecting with them, and thus influencing them in some way.
Be clear and direct with your copy – from the beginning, specify what your article is about; this applies to sales letters, website articles, press releases, etc. You have very little time in which to convey to your prospect what your article is about.
Your prospect will want to know immediately what your whole article is about. If you fail to grab their attention immediately in your first few lines, then they are less likely to read the rest of you article.
The Headline – Probably The Most Important Element Of Any Web Copy
Make sure your headline works. Headlines are responsible for website visitors actually reading the rest of your article/content.
Headlines can make or break you in your home business. Poor headlines will almost certainly ensure the rest of your content is not read. If you cannot grab their attention with your headline, your prospects WILL NOT read the rest of your article.
Emotion-driven headlines that speak directly to a person’s greatest need, will create better responses from readers. Where possible, and if it makes sense, use adjectives in your headlines and subheadings. These generally “add life” to your headlines.
Spend a lot of time working on your headlines, for these will determine whether your prospect reads the rest of your content or not.
If you have paid close attention to the articles and websites within your niche, you may have noticed different general categories or types of headlines in use. Here are a few of them:
1. straight-benefit headlines – what will the reader benefit from reading the article? These are the typical “how-to” articles.
2. headlines that get readers curious – ask a question that is playing in the reader’s mind. If you have conducted your research, then you know what your prospect’s major problem is.
3. headlines based on popular book titles – as long as you can relate the title to your article and the particular problem you are solving, and the book makes sense to your target audience, eg, “How To Generate Leads And Turn Them Into Paying Customers”…….based on Dale Carnegie’s, “How To Win Friends And Influence People”.
4. Headlines that play along movie titles. This works as long as your target market knows the movies you are referring to. Again, your market research will tell you this information.
(Ideas for these headline types are credited to Ben Settle of Copywriting Grab Bag).
Always ensure though, that your headline supports the content of your article.
Holding Readers Fixed On Your Post With Your Website Copywriting Skill
Keep the reader involved. Tell an interesting story, or ask them questions that keep their eyeballs on your content. Stories are easier to digest and remember and will more likely keep your prospects reading on.
Entertaining and informative content will also help your cause. Always make sure though, that your content is relevant to your intended reader.
Simple words, short sentences and paragraphs make for light and easy reading. Nothing puts off readers as much as having to read a very long article that has just a few paragraphs and very long sentences.
You will get better response rates from readers where you have short paragraphs and sentences. Words that are complex and difficult for readers to understand can also have a negative impact on their reading experience.
