Writing articles for major magazines is one of the most lucrative ways to make money through your writing skills. I know a lot of people who write just 4-5 magazine articles per month and they make as much money as those people who have 9am-5pm job. Do you want to be one of them? Then, you better try your luck in this endeavor. But before that, consider these 6 important tips when you start writing your feature articles:
Stick with what you know. Although you can write about topics that sound alien to you, you’ll most likely to produce high quality, very informative articles if you touch on topics that you know very well or those that you find very, very interesting. Find publications that will be interested on the articles that you may want to write. For example, if you want to write about golf or boxing, you may want to apply to sports magazines.
Choose interesting topics. I am sure there are so many topics related to your chosen subject. But I highly recommend that you stick with those that are extremely interested to the demographics that you’re targeting. For example, if you’re writing for magazines that are targeting people who would like to get started in golf, you may write how-to articles for beginners. The key here is giving your target readers exactly what they want so they’ll get excited in reading your articles.
Make it fun to read. Think of your target readers when writing your articles. Then, use elements that can help you give these people great reading experience. Use their language and even their expressions. Insert related stories or examples when needed.
Do your research. Even if you think that you already know your chosen topics inside out, I would still recommend extensive research. You might be surprised as to how much fresh information you’ll be able to get. Aside from reading relevant publications and online resources, it will also help if you interview experts in your chosen niche. The more information you gather, the more valuable your feature articles will become to the eyes of your readers.
Breakdown your article into several but short sub topics. Your readers will find your articles easy to read and easy to understand if you break them down into several bite-sized paragraphs. List down all the ideas that you would like to discuss and explain them using 3-7 sentences. Make sure that you use subheadings that will help in making your articles scannable.
Target human emotions. Your articles will most likely to leave a lasting mark on the mind of your readers if you appeal to human emotions. Find ways on how you can communicate the information you have in such a way that you’ll be able to make your readers feel specific emotions. Make them feel happy, excited, or leave them teary-eyed. The choice is yours!
