Just as the name sounds, persuasive copywriting ‘persuades’ a reader to enter your website, check out your product and feel a ‘need’ for it. It is the secret of turning normal visitors to your site into long-term customers.
A basic tenet of persuasive copywriting is that you have to remember that a visitor to your website always has this question in his or her mind: What’s in it for me? Exactly! Why should a surfer spend even a minute of his time viewing your website? You may have spent $20,000 building it but why should a visitor even care! Don’t worry, it is up to your copywriting to turn these so called ‘heartless’ surfers into your customers who will keep coming back to your website for more!
To achieve that, the golden rule is to write a killer copy! Your copy can make or break a sale. To make sure that it serves your purpose, keep your copy short, to the point. It should tell visitors why they NEED your product in a simple and straightforward manner.
One easy way of writing a persuasive copy is to implement what psychologists call ‘social proof’ into your headline. A simple proof of social proof is: Try and sit outside under a parasol on a sunny day when visiting a coffee shop. You may be the first one to do it but after a while, you’ll notice there are more people around you outside in the sun sipping coffee! Why did they do this? It’s Simple. Here’s the logic– if one person is doing it, it must be a good thing. Use this line of thought to your copies and see the wonders. You can write a copy such as: Learn how thousands of people have (done whatever your product does…). A large number of interested potential customers would easily get hooked. And you haven’t even started using persuasive techniques!
Pay attention to your headline. The subject of ‘how to write the best headlines’ is worth volumes of books! Everyone may have their own opinions regarding writing headlines. Whatever the opinions are, the purpose remains the same: grab the reader’s attention.
In the body of the text, try and avoid lengthy paragraphs, convoluted words, jargons and complicated language. Do not underline your text or highlight them. Not only is it annoying, it makes your site look ‘wannabe’! And underlining is only for links and hyperlinks. If possible bullet your points. It will…
o Make it easier for the reader to read
o Make it easier for them to remember what they read
o Break the monotony of your writing
The point is clear. Straightforward headlines, a concise body, and the right words will help translate casual visits to your website into brisk business.
