Persuade With Copywriting (No Tricks)

Sales copy, opportunity, affiliate link. My inbox is flooded with these every week. Sometimes it gets so bad I can’t even find the important ones. Most of these emails never get opened. Can you blame me? I don’t want to spend my entire day sifting through them. I don’t have that kind of time, or patience, and I’m sure you don’t either. So you scan them and IF a headline pops off the page at you, you open it and give it a cursory glance.
These letters are the products of copywriters. Every business needs a copywriter. whether that means hiring someone or learning the ins and outs yourself. Having a killer sales letter is life and death to any business but especially to an online business. Now you can go out and buy every marketing course in the world, you can learn to get thousands of prospects coming to your site and flood forums, article markets, press releases, and social media with links, but if the sales copy of your page doesn’t do its job you make ZERO, NOTHING, ZIP.
So how do you go about getting past that first page to where people actually see your product?
It’s a simple answer but I’ve found most copywriters miss this. Learn to understand people.
Of those thousands of sales letters and pitches that hit your inbox every day can you think of one that actually caught your attention? I bet if you can it connected with you on a personal level. I recently read a letter that crashed over me and swept me straight out to sea with its flow. By the end of the two page letter I would have bought anything the guy told me to. Now I don’t know if he studied for years to learn how people react and think or hit on it by accident but somehow he made it there.
1 in 1000. Those aren’t very good odds.
So how can you reach people, connect with them and move them to where you want them to be?
There’s a secret to it. Do you want to know?
They’re called the Laws of Persuasion and they work on everyone. “Hype” I hear you say. “Impossible.” But it’s not. The reason they work is because they can’t be faked. People want to feel important, they crave it almost as much as food and water, and good copywriting won’t just tell them what they need, it validates their struggle, their feelings, and makes them feel important. Understand the laws and you’ll start to see why this is so.
Let’s go into just one of these laws.
THE LAW OF OBLIGATION: This law is also called the law of reciprocity, and states that when others do something for you, you feel a strong need to do something for them.
People are not comfortable getting something for nothing. They feel they must return the favor. The pressure to reciprocate is strong enough that when people don’t return the favor they are viewed with contempt and disgust.
When favors are given, people feel in debt to the person giving them. The more indebted they feel the more motivated they are to eliminate the debt. Secrets also create a feeling of reciprocity. When you tell somebody a secret they are more inclined to open up and you create a feeling of obligation and trust with that person.
Now you know one law, which in essence boils down to: Give people more than they ever expected even before they buy anything from you, and they will reciprocate.
