“I’ve tried out dozens of article writers, and I just can’t seem to find a good one. They just don’t deliver what they promise.” Have you ever found yourself saying this? I’ve heard this lament more times than I care to count. There is, however, a way to greatly increase your odds of finding a good SEO article writer.
Certainly, you have to ask for writing samples. The problem here, though, is that what you often get aren’t representative examples of a writer’s work. Instead, you get a handful the writer’s very best Muse-inspired work – which doesn’t tell you much about what that writer can produce day in and day out on a regular, ongoing basis. And that’s what you really need to know.
So you should find out what the writer’s area of expertise/specialization is – and then ask for something else. Yup, have the writer write on a topic she knows absolutely nothing about.
When you do this, you’ll stand a much better chance of finding out exactly what this writer can consistently produce. You’ll also discover quite a bit about the writer’s research skills, versatility, and ability to operate under pressure. And you can see whether the quality and style of the sample articles you commission are consonant with those of the samples provided by the writer. There should be a fairly good match. If not, beware.
An example from my own experience may help here. About a year ago, I was contacted about writing some articles on a subject I knew absolutely nothing about – the pharmaceutical industry. I was straight up with the contact person. I told her I thought I could do this project, but that there was always the possibility I couldn’t pull it off. So I dug in and hit the research. After the agreed-upon time, I sent her the test articles. She was absolutely pleased, and I got a long-term writing job.
But the important point is that if she had just looked at my portfolio, she would never have known whether I could really write the kind of articles she needed on that (to me) foreign subject matter. She found out I could do it – and so did I.
And there’s one more thing: be willing to pay full price for sample articles. You want to replicate as closely as possible actual working conditions. And basic human nature usually undermines our work when we’re paid a pittance. It’s not deliberate, but occurs unbidden and subconsciously. If you want to find out what the prospective writer can really do, then pay her what you would pay for articles after you had actually hired her.
