This article is about writing effective web copy. A main function of writing good copy is being able to sell your idea. I’m writing this article to help teach you how to sell that idea.
There is a lot of web copy out there. There are lots of folks writing copy for the web too. Some are very skilled at it, many others just haven’t grasped the concept yet. Although it is true you need to sell the product you are promoting, but most folks are interested so much in the product as they are in the idea of the product.
Selling Your Idea Not Your Product
One thing about website copy is that online copy writing is different from offline writing. Offline writing is for magazine articles, you know they write about the next celebrity party or the latest home makeover fad.
In writing copy for the web, especially when writing a sales page, it is more important to convey and sell your idea of the product. It is important to talk about the product, that is why they are there, but folks are there to solve a problem. Writing words that sell the idea of the product will keep them on the page long enough to click through to the product.
Are you Selling the Idea or Describing it?
Often times the words in your copy start to describe the idea. They tell what it is, they tell about the features and not the benefits of the idea. It turns out you are describing the idea, not selling the idea.
The use of power words can help you to sell your idea instead of just describing it. Words like limited time are usually very effective. Think about that for a bit. Time in today’s society is at a premium. We have very little extra time for learning new things. Ever hear someone wish for another couple hours in every day so they could get things done?
Here’s What I’ve Got
Writing sales pages is similar to the squeeze page in that you have limited space and time to get your idea across to your buyer. There are a few things that you have to supply to the reader to keep them on the page, and to compel them to make that purchase.
You have to tell them why they are there. Tell them what it is you have for them. Again, sell the idea of what you have for them. Use power words to make it desirable to them.
Another thing you need to have in your copy is telling them what it does for them. Let’s face it, people only want to know what’s in it for me. Again, sell them on the idea of how powerful these benefits of your product are to them.
After you have written a compelling copy selling them on the idea of your product, they will be ready to let you lead them by the hand. Do just that, tell them what you want them to do next. Give them a call to action.
