Are you new to copywriting? Do you feel overwhelmed by all the things you don’t know?
This is common when you’re just starting out. Just remember everyone has to learn how to do, before they can be come good at what they do. With that said, I want to give you a quick, easy and right way to improve your copy.
First let’s go over a few basics.
Keep it simple
Effective copy is simple, clear but stimulating. It causes your prospect to act. Why should it be simple?
Because you want it to be understood by everyone. If a six grader can read and understand your copy, so will a theologian. Your prospect will not be confused or find it necessary to pull out his dictionary to figure out what a word meant.
Make it clear
Your copy also needs to be clear. Your objective it to get the prospect to buy the product or service-which won’t happen if he is confused. As a copywriter it’s your job to make everything crystal clear for the prospect. If you have to use terminology that is technical then explain it in the simplest of terms for your prospect to understand.
There are several ways to do this:
Use short words
Use short sentences
Use short paragraphs
Use clear concepts
Why use short words? Again, your prospect is probably not walking around with a Webster’s Dictionary in hand.
Why use short sentences? Because long sentences take more, time to breakdown and comprehend.
Why short use paragraphs? For the same reason as short sentences. The human eye gets tired fast, so you want to make the reading of your copy easy and quick.
Limit contraction usage
When writing try not to use too many contractions. Apostrophes are distractions and cause the reader to have to do more mental work. Fred E. Hahn in Tested Advertising Methods said, “Contractions tire the eyes. They force the eye to take the tiny apostrophes into consideration. To the careless reader, “We’re” looks like “Were.”” By limiting contractions you can eliminate errors in understanding.
You want your prospect to read the copy all the way through until they are compelled to act-you want them to buy what you are selling or contact you for more information. You don’t want to turn them off from your copy before you even had a chance to close the sale.
Avoid using exclamation marks
As you write you avoid to using too many “!” exclamation marks, for they can be mistaken for a one or as a typo. For instance, “Payroll!” looks like it has an extra “l.” Or with the word “How!” it looks like howl. Or maybe even how 1.
It is better not to use “!” to often to avoid confusion.
Now if you follow these simple tips, you will be able to fix your copy easily and right.
Just remember to:
Keep it simple
Avoid over using contractions limit exclamation marks
Write in a clear manner
Define any hard to understand words or concepts
