Online writing, the future of journalism, books – fiction or otherwise – and the source of the world’s current reference library for just about everything, is a growing and profitable career. The key to success is getting noticed. It sounds easy but is it really? Who will read your article or blog? How will anyone know it’s there? Will anyone ever find your sage words in the latest e-book to hit the web? There are a few things you can do to get your online writing noticed.
Network
Social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon and others can be great places to share links to your work. Friends, family and even total strangers can check out your work and then in turn, share it with their contacts. The more your work is passed around, the more notice you earn.
The Secret Keywords
Google and other search engines use keywords to determine how pertinent an article is compared to the words the searcher has entered. To get noticed with online writing, you need to consider how someone else would perform a search for the information you are writing about. For example, if you are writing about comedic movies, you would use the words movies, films comedies, humor and other related words throughout your article. When the search engine scans it, in response to a search, it will determine if your article appears to match the search criteria. You don’t want to overdo this technique as that can get you trouble with the Google Gods too. Shoot for about 4% key wording of your piece.
Create a Website
Having a website can be a great way to promote your work. If you are publishing on multiple sites, you can link to these sites, often through RSS feeds which keep refreshing your website whenever you publish new content. Showcase your best work and set up a section about yourself so readers can get to know a little about the person behind the words. Many Internet service providers offer free websites to their customers so this doesn’t have to be a big investment. As your work garners the attention you want, you may want to upgrade to a more diverse site but that’s down the road a bit.
Don’t forget to include a way for readers and potential customers to contact you. Set up a free email account with Yahoo, G-mail or Hot Mail expressly for this purpose. If your work is for sale or your services for hire, you may generate interest by making yourself easy to contact.
