Here is a VERY simple tip that will make your writing sizzle! This works for website copy, blog posts, printed reports, and posts on Facebook. Use this tip for ANYTHING you write.
Keep your paragraphs short. One, two, or three sentences are the most you need.
Then start a new paragraph.
Why? Because it makes your writing look easier to read and understand. People take one glance at your post and immediately think “that’s gonna be EASY to understand..and FAST to read.”
Who wants easy stuff to read? After writing thousands of articles for hundreds of ezines, sites, magazines — you name it — I found the BUSIER a person is, the more they want EASY writing to read.
That means CEO’s, bosses, managers, and anybody who signs checks are going to appreciate how YOUR WRITING saves them time. And TIME is what they value most.
When you make your writing EASY to read, more people read what you have to say. More people UNDERSTAND your writing. And more people ACT on your advice.
So keep those paragraphs short. How do I know this? I’ve been told by millionaire writers and national magazine editors short paragraphs are the way to go.
The one place you don’t want short paragraphs is when writing for a college class. Academic writing wants big, long, thick paragraphs. Yes that’s bad writing in my opinion, but it’s a topic we will have to delve into in another article.
Here is a simple way to write an effective short paragraph. State your main idea as simply as you can. Now write another sentence that says your idea in a different way so that people who didn’t quite get your first statement will now understand completely. Write a third sentence that gives a little more detail about your idea.
Now skip a line and start a new paragraph. Make this paragraph the same 3 line length as the last.
Skip a line and write another. Don’t have three 3 lines of info? Make your paragraph two lines or even one.
All that extra white space in between your short paragraphs makes the copy look more approachable and faster to read. Readers love that and editors know it.
In the mean time, keep writing. The Internet needs a constant supply of words written by real people who have real experiences and knowledge to share. All the computers, $5 article writers, and spinner apps in the world can’t come close to what YOU create when writing about what you love.
