They say creative writing takes talent, and I guess that means all of us that do it – are talented. Yeah! I mean goodie for both me and you right? Well, let’s discuss some interesting considerations about how the brain works while thinking and writing, and let’s contemplate on which type of writing will work best to accelerate our creative writing skills and unlock our full potential shall we?
Okay so, when folks used to do creative writing they used an ink pen and parchment. Or we could go back further and say they used a piece of charcoal, animal blood, or chalk like stone on the inside of a cave wall? Others used chisels and other tools to carve their words into wood, stone, and even metallic minerals and elements like gold for instance.
Today, most of us use a key board, and still, others mix-it-up with a little speech recognition when we write, that indeed helps us write faster, and get the thoughts down as we think. Still, there is a big difference between creative story telling using ones voice – literally telling a story as if you are talking to someone, and typing it all out on little plastic keys on a high-tech laptop, or key board – yes, even a touch pad screen now.
Are you beginning to see all the differences here, all the potential available for different types of thought? You see, many of us creative writers probably started out writing in journals with pen, or sketching pictures, and writing poems with a pencil. In this case you are holding something in your hand, just like a musical instrument and you let the music (words) flow as your mind creates.
See the vast difference between pounding on a key board as you watch the screen as it displays what you typed? Following along at what you just wrote. When you use voice software your mind is concentrating perhaps more on what you are thinking and a little on trying to make sure the voice software wrote down what you said.
This means your mind is doing two-things at once, and it’s working slightly differently than if you were telling a story to your friend out loud, or if you were posting this into a journal or typing it out onto your blog. See all those points? Well, guess what? It all matters. So, you have to experiment to see what works best for you. Every mind works differently, some better than others, and it matters which way it is working depending on the results you are looking for!
