Do you still think that online writing is any different than any other type of writing? Think again.
I am sure you have read that online writing is different than printed writing. I know I have, many times. But is that really so? Well, this article will give you the one proof you need to take this lie out of your mind once and for all.
As a writer, I am also an avid reader, and just a couple of days ago I’ve read a very interesting article from a seasoned newspaper writer who started his article with a quote from writer and poet Gertrude Stein who said: “A text is a text is text”.
Then, it was very interesting that he went on to mention how during one of his first classes as a newspaper student writer 40 years ago, his professor said something totally shocking to him. What did his professor said? Well, he said that newspaper readers were in a hurry and wouldn’t read an article in its entirety”. Sounds familiar?
You bet it is! We have been told by so many online writers that online writing is different from printed writing for this very main reason, like it was the great news to the 21st online century, while this newspaper writer tells us how he knows this fact for 40 years and how it applies to any type of writing, online or in print. Then, he goes on to say how the techniques used for printed text are EXACTLY the same as the online ones. What are they?
Using correct grammar and punctuation
Using headlines
Using short sentences
Using short paragraphs
Writing captivating content that would attract the reader
Articles should be between 400 and 500 words for optimum results
Is there anything news for online writers here? Of course not; this is exactly how we should write an online article as well, don’t we?
This was such a great eye opener for me to see that not only online readers are in a rush as some internet marketers try to make us believe, but ALL readers are. If newspaper readers of some 40 years ago were in a rush, imagine how they might be today?
I am sure that after reading these facts, you are convinced like me that there is no difference what so ever between online text and printed text.
The moral of all this, is that as long as you write your online articles with the same common sense that seasoned writers used and still are using today to write in print, you will be just fine.
