Today, I’m going to share with you the ten most effective ones from my personal experience and why each one is effective.
#1: Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make
Rattling off mistakes to help others avoid them will always be an effective headline or title because it implies “I’ve been there, and this is what I learned.” People appreciate tips uncovered through others’ experiences.
#2: How to (do something, avoid pain, enjoy pleasure, etc.)
Similar to the first example where you share mistakes to avoid, instructing others how to do something that you learned from personal experience is well received. The implication is that you’re going to share step-by-step information so that your reader can avoid inefficiencies when trying something new.
#3: Keys to (specific results, success, avoiding failure, etc.)
Much like the “how-to” example above, sharing the keys to accomplishing something implies personal experience and “insider knowledge.” People appreciate shortcuts of any kind so this headline/title is very effective.
#4: Tips to/for (something your audience desires)
I agree that these are getting a bit redundant and would add to that you need to test variations to determine the most effective for your specific situation. Tips and keys are very similar, but changing one word can make a huge difference when you’re talking about trying to attract a large volume of people.
#5: Who Else Wants (specific result, success with something, to avoid a certain pain, etc.)?
The question headline forces the reader to imagine themselves in the situation you’re asking about. Our human nature is to envision the situation from a first person perspective so getting asked a specific question forces us to place ourselves there even if it’s just for a brief second. That brief second can be the difference between getting your item opened and read or discarded altogether.
#6: Reasons You MUST (do something)
Giving readers a “reason why” is always a good marketing practice. It makes them feel as though they’re getting insider access and they’re part of something. Look at it this way: let’s say your favorite store has a sale just like every other store has a sale. Think about how you react when they tell you why they’re having the sale versus just saying “we’re having a sale.” Sharing the reason why answers the question “so what?”
#7: (Specific) Challenges and How to Overcome Them
With every endeavor, there are inherent challenges. You know this, but your audience may not know this at the time they stumble upon your content or offer. Sharing the challenge implies that you’ve experienced it and know how to overcome it.
This is also useful in a sales situation by bringing a likely objection to the surface and overcoming it before the prospect even raises it to build trust and credibility.
#8: Quick Hit (Topic) To Do List
The implication here is that you’ve done whatever it is you’re getting ready to tell others how to do, and you’re willing to give them the short and sweet action items. This title suggests that you’ve discovered shortcuts to accomplishing something so that’s why it’s effective.
#9: Beginner FAQs About (Topic)
Whenever people are starting something new or are afraid to ask “easy” questions, they’ll often seek out the information on their own so they don’t embarrass themselves in public. This presents a great opportunity for you to become a trusted source by answering questions that your audience may perceive as “entry level.” Never underestimate the power of helping those just getting started!
#10: Ways to (achieve a desired result)
This last headline/title is very similar to the ones above, and it implies you’ve been there and done that so you’re a good resource to help your reader achieve the desired result they are seeking.
Summary
While this list of headlines/titles isn’t all encompassing, each one has proven quite effective for attracting a desired target audience to click or read something designed to encourage further action.
