The Rise Of The Freelance Writer

There’s something in economics called the “division of labor.” It wasn’t too popular back in the days of hunting and gathering, when people had to run around chasing after their food. But as soon as people settled down into an agricultural society, the division of labor became pretty popular. In technical terms, this was called the “neolithic revolution.”
What does this mean? In the cave man days, the only way to get food was to chase and kill animals, or to dig up roots. There weren’t a lot of different skills involved, so everybody pretty much did the same thing. But when people settled down, they could grow food, and keep farm animals. This meant that not only was getting food easy, but there were different ways of doing it.
For example, somebody might be pretty good at growing corn. So they’d be a corn farmer. Somebody else might be really good at raising pigs, so they’d be a pig farmer. Still somebody else would be pretty good at building fences, so he’d work for the farmers. Still another person would be good at building houses, so he’d work for the farmers and the fence maker.
Everybody settled into their own area of expertise, sold stuff, and used the proceeds to buy what they wanted. Because of this division of labor, society flourished. Cities grew and became wealthy. All because people switched from hunting to agriculture.
Right now, we’re in the midst of another revolution. The Information revolution. All the information we need is at our fingertips. Once again we are seeing another explosion in the division of labor. People that are good at any kind of skill that assists businesses in taking advantage of the information revolution are making tons of cash. Programmers, web developers, graphic artists, and writers.
Why writers? Because in order for any website to be taken seriously, it’s got to have useful content. It’s got to have interesting articles and posts related to the particular niche the product is in. Just like a store that sells TVs needs to have helpful staff to explain things to shoppers, any business that has a website needs helpful articles to explain things to the readers.
And where do most of these websites get this content from? People just like you. Writers working from home. Writers that can do some research, and write an interesting article about some particular product or service. That is precisely why being a freelance writer is one of the best jobs to have today.
