Creative Writing – A Beginner’s View

In a general sense, the art of writing is creative in its own nature. It may be safe to conclude so since the process of writing is not only the actual putting of pen onto paper, but it includes a “think about it” stage. You may want your pen’s ink to flow dramatically onto the blank sheet; however, it won’t unless you put some of your creative thoughts into it. To be able to write, one must organize their thoughts and ponder how to get the interest of the readers.
However, the scope of creative writing incorporates a different range than that of journalistic and technical writing. It may cover both fiction and non-fiction as long as it deviates from the bounds of normal academic and technical forms of literature. (Poetry, epics, etc. could be considered as examples of this.)
Creative writing has always been a good form of self-expression. As a matter of fact, it has been considered to be an effective emotional outlet to many people, including young adults. One can rant, hoot and holler as much as he wants in his journal without receiving any complaints from anyone else.
On the other hand, some people believe that they are not born to write and that the talent of writing would never dawn upon them. But writing is not an innate talent that one is born with; it is something that can be learned as we grow. A couple of years in a creative writing class are more than enough to awaken your imagination and you might just find that you have learned to write in a variety of forms.
Though having the talent of a great writer is possible, it requires a genuine desire for writing to be achieved. A writer must sincerely want to write or else all efforts would end in vain.
When starting to write, it would be better if you don’t get too engrossed with grammar and spelling. Don’t get too caught up with the technical restrictions. On the contrary, write as freely as you can. Let your words flow out just like the train of thoughts you have there in your mind. This way, you can start off with a good draft, and then you can edit and revise afterward.
It is also a good thing to remember that reading has always been a good partner with writing. You can’t rely solely on your own imagination and knowledge; sometimes, you will have to learn through other people’s experiences through reading. (Remember the fact that scarce input will always result in a poor output.)
So, if you are one of those people who thought writing creatively will never be your forte, start picking up that pen and write. Day by day, you will see a difference no matter how small. Write now and who knows in a couple of years or decades, you might be placed in the league of famous writers.
