Even the most creative writer will face setbacks at some point in time. One of the worst is not being able to finish something on time, especially if you are on a deadline. There are three main areas that you need to work on if you are to be successful in learning to write quickly.
1) Your focus.
Ideas are a writer’s best friend…and their worst enemy. Sometimes you can’t think of a single thing to say and other times your head is filled with so many ideas that you have no idea where to start. Either way, you won’t be writing quickly.
The key to overcoming this is fine-tuning your focus. It is best to start with an outline, even if you’re just writing a short article. Select a topic and put down all of your ideas related to it. Don’t try to have this done in any particular order…just write. Once you’ve done that, you can now go back and weed through the ones that don’t make sense or don’t fit in with what you’re trying to do.
Once you know exactly what it is that you have to write, you need to give yourself the time to do it. Don’t try to fit it in to your already cramped schedule. You need to devote a particular amount of time to writing and stick with it. Eventually your brain will get used to the idea that this is ‘writing time’ and you’ll be amazed as how quickly the words will come.
2) Your writing style.
Everyone has their own voice when it comes to writing. The secret is finding yours. If you’re not accustomed to writing on technical topics, don’t attempt to complete an IT based tutorial. If your tone is naturally more ‘cut and dry’ than conversational, then stick with that.
Of course you need to keep your readers in mind. As a writer, it is always best to ask yourself these questions before you start writing anything, whether it’s an article or an ebook.
§ Who is going to be reading this?
§ How can I best reach them?
§ What are some of the things that they would like to hear?
§ Which viewpoint should I use?
§ What tone should I use to best convey what I am trying to say?
Finding the answer to these questions before you start the actual writing process will help you get a picture in your mind of how the article or ebook should be written. You can now simply sit and put the information on paper.
3) Your environment.
Yes, time is very important when you’re writing but you can have an entire day devoted to your writing efforts and still get practically nothing done. A big part of being able to write quickly is finding an environment in which you are comfortable, and where you won’t be bombarded by endless distractions.
One of the best places to do this is in your own home. Find a nice quiet room all to yourself and put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign if necessary. Turn your cell phone off for a while and make sure that, if you’re typing on your computer, you have nothing on but your word processing program. If, like me, you find nature soothing then consider finding a quiet corner in a nearby park. The point is, do whatever you need to give yourself the opportunity to focus your creative efforts.
