When writing an online article, it sometimes makes sense to use well-known quotes, or the previous words from historical super stars of humanity. Over use of quotes is a problem however, otherwise your article will sound like it is cliche ridden, and it will turn off anyone with any deal of intellect. As a writer who rights to a more intellectual crowd, this is something I have to be weary of, and something you may wish to consider.
Not long ago, an online article author expert made a statement about how hard it was find the correct wording of various quotes online. “What happens when these famous quotes online don’t match, which one is the correct one?” Yes, big problem. Worse, many of the quotes have been translated from other languages, or in the instance of religious quotes from a work such as “The Holy Bible” there are many different versions, you see the challenge.
The online article expert author does show that is a really serious topic for online writers of essays, articles, and content. I’ve sometimes had challenges here too, so I’d write something such as; Einstein once said something to effect that “imagination is more important than knowledge” and then go on with my article, or describe something someone said such as; Machiavelli in the Prince made the point that “it is better to be loved and respected than feared and respected, however being feared and respected is second best.”
By doing this, I quote the “thought” and allow the reader to know that it may not be the “exact words” but it is the basic meaning of the idea, or how I interpreted what was said by whom. Even Wikipedia doesn’t often have correct quotes, and I have a couple of quote books on my desk here, they disagree often with each other and all the stuff on the Internet.
Now then, there are several great source books that all writers should have nearby, I use “Harper’s Book of Quotes,” and “The Oxford Book of Quotes,” as I trust those sources more than what’s online. Maybe if you are a perfectionist you might consider picking yourself up a copy of one of those. Occasionally, I see other Quote Books recommended in Writer’s Digest, which I believe every writer should subscribe too, it’s just a great place to start.
It’s not easy being a great writer, I’m not, and I’ve written so many eBooks I can’t count them anymore, and over 20,500 articles. Constantly learning, so, perhaps you might consider all this. “Be well, live well, and live longest,” the old Viking Quote!
