A Selection and list of Mixed Drinks

Drink enthusiasts love making the old standbys. So for all the amateur bartenders who want to get to know some classic drinks, here is a list of mixed drinks, their ingredients, and how to make them.

Martini
For this classic among classics, you pour 2 1/2 ounces gin and 1/2 ounce dry vermouth into a mixing glass filled with ice cubes and stir for 30 seconds. After that strain the drink into a chilled cocktail glass, add a dash of orange or Angostura bitters (not required) and garnish with the olive or lemon twist.

Gin & Tonic
This straightforward classic requires 2 ounces gin, 5 ounces tonic water, and a lime wedge. Pour the ingredients into a highball glass with ice balls, stir well, and garnish with a lime wedge.

Cosmopolitan
To make a Cosmopolitan, mix 1 1/2 ounces vodka or citrus vodka, 1 ounce Cointreau orange liqueur, 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice, 1/4 ounce cranberry juice and some ice into a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain the liquid into a frosted cocktail glass, garnish with an orange peel, and serve.

Classic Old-Fashioned
This unceasing favorite is made by first placing one sugar cube at the bottom of an old-fashioned glass and drenching it with 2 – 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. After that, add one orange slice and muddle. Then fill the glass with ice balls, add 3 ounces bourbon whiskey, stir well and garnish with a second orange slice and a maraschino cherry.

Fuzzy Navel
This fruity drink with a funny name is quite easy to mix. Pour 1 1/2 ounces peach schnapps into a highball glass filled with ice balls. Top with orange juice, stir well, and serve.

Highball
Also known as ‘Scotch and Soda’, this cocktail should not be confused with the group of drinks called ‘highballs’. To make this one, fill a highball glass with ice balls. Pour in 2 ounces whiskey then top with 2 – 4 ounces ginger ale.

Manhattan
Lastly, there’s the classic Manhattan. Start by pouring 2 ounces rye whiskey, 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth, and 2 – 3 dashes Angostura bitters into a mixing glass with ice cubes. Stir everything together well then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry and serve.

Making Perfect Ice Balls
