If you have ever watched Extreme Makeover Home Edition, you’ll know it’s possible to build a house in a week. Does one person do it all? Of course not, it takes a team to make the dream happen for the deserving family. In lightening fast motion, they show the foundation, the framing, the driveway paving, and the landscape all being erected.
But what if you’re a freelance copywriter and you want to build an entrepreneurial lifestyle house? It certainly doesn’t happen in seven days and you’re a team of one in most cases. So, how does this get done? Here are a few tips to get your freelance copywriter house built on a solid foundation:
1. Pour a foundation of trust and faith. Nothing else goes up until a good foundation is laid down. In the life of a freelance copywriter, trust and faith are essential for a good foundation. Everyone has faith in someone or something. You trust the chair underneath you will not collapse. You trust your car will start when you want it to. You trust your spouse or friends to lend a listening ear when you need them. Before you do one more thing to build your business, have faith that this is exactly where you’re supposed to be in life; that this is your mission. Trust your skill set and natural talent.
2. Frame your freelance copywriter house with a heart of giving. Before walls can go up, a house needs to be framed. When you first began your own journey as a freelance copywriter, I’m sure you read e-newsletters and ezines and poked around online to find answers to your questions. Maybe you even connected with another freelancer farther along the path who could help you establish your business on solid ground. My admonition to you is to frame your freelance copywriter house with a heart of giving. Pay it forward. Selectively choose pro bono projects to work on or simply give your time to another copywriter who hasn’t made as much progress as you have.
3. Pave the way with effort. Success doesn’t come easy…if it did, we wouldn’t value it. Pave your way with daily, consistent effort. Sacrifice of some type is necessary and as Jon Gordon’s affirmation states, “I am willing to pay the price that greatness requires.” This doesn’t mean ignoring your spouse, kids, and friends but be willing to set boundaries to achieve your goals.
4. Landscape your freelance copywriter business with a variety of marketing seeds. You wouldn’t plant the same type of plant throughout your entire yard. You’d mix it up with a variety of color and sizes. Why do the same with your marketing? Don’t settle for one-of-kind marketing. Plant some social media seeds along with a few direct sales letters. Sow some article marketing with a blog or newsletter. Mix it up and you’ll reap a colorful bloom of results.
5. Light the path with positive affirmations. Nothing accents a front yard like properly placed lights that illuminate the plants and flowers you’ve carefully planted in strategic spots. I was never a big believer in writing positive affirmations until I joined the joyfully jobless as a freelance copywriter. My mindset has changed completely and as a result, I’m now an avid writer of them.
Even though they have changed a bit as I’ve grown as a person and as my business has evolved, they are powerful reminders of the possibilities that exist. I mix them up with spiritual such as ‘God is enlarging my borders’ to financial, ‘money flows toward me easily’ to business, ‘sports and fitness clients are making their way to me’ and even material (though not a big priority for me). Create your own and don’t be afraid to change them as you mature as a freelancer.
Now you know how to build a freelance copywriter house from the ground up. Add your own flair and unique characteristics to the foundation, framing, paving, landscaping and lighting. Your freelance business will not only be on solid ground, it will reflect who you are and all you can offer your clients.
