High quality aged wine is a beverage that is often only enjoyed during special occasions and holidays. Wine connoisseurs who take their wine seriously invest a lot in Wine cellar design to ensure each bottle is kept safely tucked away from the elements.
For those who are just starting their wine collection, it is normal to dream about the perfect Wine room design. It’s even more common to find yourself wondering if the bottles you’ve kept over the years are still good. Here are a couple of signs that will indicate it’s time to throw away the wine:
1 – More Brown Than Expected
While doing a visual check, take note of the wine’s color. If it comes out more brown than what you expected, there’s a good chance it has oxidized after getting exposed to the air.
2 – Cloudy And Forms A Film
There are some wines that are cloudy which means this sign might not be as easy to identify. However, when the wine is meant to be clear and turns out cloudy from the bottle, it is time to worry. Another sign that microbial activity has begun is when the wine forms a film on the surface after being poured.
3 – Bubbles Where There Shouldn’t Be
Pouring wine can result in bubbles, but if the wine becomes frothy, that’s trouble. Contaminated wine will contain a lot of bacteria which will cause bubbling. When there’s an excessive amount of bubbles, it’s best to throw out the bottle.
4 – A Wet Cardboard Or Wet Dog Smell
These bad smells do not mean the wine itself is the reason, they actually indicate that something has gone wrong with the cork. This means that the cork has molds which may have also affected the wine, making it unsafe for consumption.
5 – A Strong Barnyard Or Band-Aid Smell
In cases where the wine itself smells strongly of a barnyard or worse, a band-aid there is something wrong with the wine. The smell is due to improper winery sanitation which means it can affect the entire batch. If the first bottle does smell like a barnyard, even the most amazing wine room design cannot save it.
6 – Smells Like Vinegar
A sour smell that comes like a punch is never a good sign when it comes to wine. While the taste and higher acidity level won’t bother some wine lovers, others with sensitive stomachs might have more trouble as the acetic acid can leave a burning sensation.
7 – Wine Has No Smell
Bottles that are too cold will generally have a very faint smell. However, a bit of warming using your hands will release the aroma of the wine. In some instances, wines that have no smell at all can indicate minor cork contamination or just mean the wine has very little taste, to begin with.
The best way to keep your wine safe from contamination is to keep them hidden in a cellar. A perfect wine cellar design will ensure all the bottles in your collection age with grace and remain in good quality for years to come.
