Would Americans Feel Comfortable LivingRetiring in Costa Rica?

There is a cultural difference in Costa Rica; it’s laid back, relaxed. However, a large expat population resides here so there are areas where Americans feel at home. These communities are scattered around the country and offer varying degrees of Western amenities.

Part of the appeal to living in Costa Rica is the simple relaxed lifestyle and many Americans embrace it whole-heartedly. There is a freedom, a relaxed lifestyle that many people only dream of. Costa Rica offers everything whether you want to retire or invest for the future.

I am looking to buy in Costa Rica, should I buy a house in a gated community?

It really depends on what you want. If you are looking for added security, a ready-made community, and cultural familiarity, then a gated community would be an excellent option. Gated communities provide a wonderful mixture and a way to meet people.

Do your research. There are different types of gated communities here. There’s the typical version, similar to those in the US, where all the houses are right next to each other and have cookie-cutter homes on rectangular lots. Then, there are communities designed to provide a sense of seclusion and privacy; the staggered homes are individualized and allow for a more authentic Costa Rican experience.

I’ve decided that I want to buy in a gated community in Costa Rica. Where should I buy?

In Costa Rica, location matters and, as mentioned before, it depends on what you want to experience. Where do you want to live: in a city, a rural town, or in between? Do you want easy access to the beach, hiking trails, or to shopping? What kind of property do you want? What amenities are you looking for? What temperatures are you comfortable with? How important is it to be close to an airport?

The best way to answer this question is to talk to a realtor that knows the area and can walk you through the factors, narrow down your options, and help you find the perfect community.
