8 Effective Tips For Unblocking Writer’s Block

Do you ever become anxious or feel at a loss when you are unable to produce creative and new content for a particular project or assignment? Do you run out of inspiration or find that your writing task is overwhelming? Sometimes physical, emotional, financial or spiritual pressures contribute to this condition. It is called writer’s block.
Ordinarily, those who make a living as a writer run into this dilemma from time to time. You can generate a ton of content in waves and then unexpectedly you seem to run into a dry spell about writing the simplest thing. You have to rehydrate your thought process and win the fight over writer’s block. Here are eight simple and effective tips for unblocking your writer’s block:
1. Step away from the keyboard.
Sometimes you become so fixated on staring at your computer screen or notepad for long periods that not even a single word can spark the onset of a composition. Take a break and step away from your keyboard, typewriter or notepad. It could be the thing that you need to jumpstart your creative juices with a renewed attitude.
2. Recognize what is causing your writer’s block.
Sometimes stress, preoccupation with a situation, a personal problem or some other outside factors have a tendency to distract any creative flow when organizing your written work. You have to get those distractions resolved so that they will not dominate your thought process and assassinate your creativity.
3. Try word or object exercises.
Whatever you are attempting to write about, simply jot down words that come to mind and not necessarily sentences or paragraphs about your subject. For instance, if you are writing about automobiles, write down related words like driving, wheels, ignition, maintenance, steering wheel, car keys, gasoline, engine, seatbelt or GPS. If that doesn’t cut it, look at an object like a vase, cup, a door, a plant or anything in your immediate space and write down words that describe that object. Observe the shape, color and any details that you probably would not ordinarily pay attention to. Write down those words. Who knows, that may turn out to be a poem or help to insert savvy descriptions in your current composition.
4. Change your scenery.
Grab a notepad and pen or your laptop, and then go sit outside in the fresh air. You can also choose to sit in a room with a window view in complete silence. Just absorb your surroundings and perhaps close your eyes and allow inspiration to engulf you. Sometimes by taking a break and putting other things like checking your email or answering phone calls on hold will help you to relax and give you a fresher perspective on how to approach your writing again.
5. De-cluttering your work environment.
Oftentimes writers have a tendency to work in a cluttered and chaotic environment. Perhaps there is too much noise or too many papers lying around. Perhaps you have eating receptacles or trash in plain view of your workspace. By organizing your immediate working environment, see how that changes your attitude and helps you to become more productive at the same time.
6. Find inspiration in something visual.
Flip through a magazine or newspaper to look at the photos, watch fish swimming in an aquarium, observe children playing, birds frolicking or play with your pet. Sometimes looking at objects or touching memorabilia can ignite a surge of energy for your composition. This can inspire you to apply a nostalgic or storytelling approach to your writing.
7. Meditate, exercise or take a walk.
Relaxing and reflecting on your mental well-being can be the key to clearing the barriers forming a blockade around the creative side of your brain. It could help with productivity. Every day, you need to engage in small “time out” intervals (15 or 30 minutes) dedicated to doing absolutely nothing. Unless there is a major disaster occurring, you owe this time to yourself. If you are at work or home, put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door and enforce it.
8. Listen to inspiring music and eat.
Sometimes listening to classical, jazz or instrumental music can soothe your mind and spirit from the frustration of not being able to put a single word on paper. Taking the time to avoid eating at your desk and going to another designated area to sit down, eat a decent meal while enjoying it, helps with your digestion, as well as rehydrating your energy.
You can fall victim to your writing craft by being around some type of distraction that is blocking your creativity and productivity.
