Employers list jobs on the freelance websites. They are looking for copywriters to help with email autoresponders, newsletters, blog posts, article marketing, press releases, book writing, and more. Whatever your niche or specialty is, you will be able to find any type of copywriting project.
There is another way for a freelance copywriter to find contracts. If you are just starting out or have been a freelancer for a while, then you may benefit from submitting a query letter to a local business to offer your services.
The easiest ways to find clients to offer your copywriting services to is through your local business directory at the library, yellow pages, or taking note of businesses around your town.
Small businesses sometimes may not have the budget to hire a marketing team and often rely on their own efforts to grow their business. If you are able to help them in copywriting their brochures, websites, and other marketing materials on a per project basis at an affordable rate, you may become their marketing department.
Once you have located the businesses you want to contact, you should have something to show them your work. A freelance profile and portfolio should be next on your to do list.
A freelance profile can be made on a blog or website of your choice. It is a place for you to showcase who you are, what you can offer, your rates, and possibly some testimonials from your previous and current clients.
The freelance portfolio is for you to show samples of your work. You can add an electronic portfolio to your website or have hard copies of your samples in a binder. If you do most of your work online, you may not need to build a large binder of samples, but it is recommended to have some for when you are asked for samples during a face-to face meeting.
When you add your portfolio to your website, make it easy for clients to find. Make a tab labeled portfolio and list your samples by category. For example, you can list your press releases, sample ads, brochures, and articles under separate headings.
Finding contracts as a freelance copywriter is not complicated. You can register on freelancing job sites like Odesk and Elance to find copywriting contracts. It is also possible to search for your own contracts by contacting local businesses in your area.
