In this age we live in, information overload has caused many to fish for articles with a ‘keeper’ headline. Unfortunately, writers don’t always follow through on their compelling headline promises. The goal should be not only to get people interested in the article but to ‘hook’ their attention and hold it.
Since there are a variety of types and styles of articles, a good purpose to start off with would be determining which method appropriately portrays the subject matter.
One of the styles to select from is the how-to article. An obvious point for this article, especially for very detailed instructions, is to keep the steps in the proper sequence. For a more generalized how-to article the directions should be simple and concise. After all, the goal of this article is to encourage action as the reader is eager to begin applying the how-to process in their particular endeavor.
Another style is the listing article. Here the writer would list the information in a series of parts that are related to and pertinent to the subject. Each topic in the list should be supported by a few detailed sentences. Keep in mind, though, that too much of anything can be hard to digest. So, the details should be stated in a clear and concise way.
The writer should also choose the method that best helps the reader understand the angle they’ve taken on the subject. Here are four ways this can be done:
One way is presenting the information in the form of an argument. Here it would be beneficial to convince the reader by offering several facts that should be supported with proven evidence. Make sure your references accurately check out.
Another way would be through an explanation. Start off by stating what it is that needs to be explained. Then follow through with reasons that support why an explanation is even called for. Be creative in describing any conditions or principles that support your explanation by making use of analogies and illustrations.
The right conclusion can also be shown by defining a subject. This method involves using a series of statements and facts that help define a word or concept. This can be done in an imaginative way by giving realistic examples or telling a story.
Closely related to the definition type is the article of description. For example, in a travel article, a destination can be defined by describing the cultures in the area, the points of interest to visit, and the local music and folklore. Other subjects that should be described would be objects such as in a product sales article. A state of affairs can be described in the form of a news article answering the questions who, what, why, when, and where.
