Data cabling in the modern workplace

Gone are the days where a network is made up of a ring of cables and B&C connectors. With the slightest interruption of the links and the whole network is down. We all welcomed Ethernet with open arms and we are not going to miss the old ways of networking anytime soon. The world was desperate for something new, introducing Cat5e with speeds of up to 1 Gig at a bandwidth of 100Mhz.

A massive leap forward in network stability and speed. No longer does your entire network collapse if a link is disturbed. Ethernet cables are direct links to the network from each computer allowing changes to be made with disruption. Category 6 has all the benefits of Cat 5e with the additional bonus of more than twice the bandwidth 250Mhz. With Cat 6, more can be achieved with just 1 cable, for example a PC and an IP telephone can be run on a single network outlet.

With new ways of networking come new uses for it. Theres many ways data cabling can be used.

Just to name a few: Wireless networking, IP Security Cameras (CCTV) and Access control.

Wireless networking

WI-FI or wirless networking is becoming ever more popular in Schools, businesses and homes around the globe, with ease of installation and flexibility wireless access points can be utilised in almost any situation. WI-FI has come leaps and bounds since it arrived on the scene, and now we have wireless 802.11n with speeds up to 300 Mbps making it three times faster than a standard cabled connection and five times faster than 802.11g

I.P CCTV

Security is an absolute must these days, and I.P CCTV cameras are definitely the way forward. With a wide range of cameras available that are remote controllable pan tilt and zoom (PTZ), infa red, and motion detection cameras. You can rest assured you will find the camera that suits your needs, and it all works over a standard data cable Categry 5e or Category 6. Software driven and easy to use and control from anywhere on your network, it really is a no-brainer.

Controlled access

There are so many kinds of controlled access system nowadays and more and more of them are controllable via your network. This allowes you total felxibility when it comes to controlling access to certain areas. Not only can these be controlled from anywhere but they can also be linked to CCTV systems. When a door is forced. for example, an alarm is set off and if it is linked to CCTV then the video feed will be taken from a camera focussed on the door in question. This means you will be able to ID who actually forced the door and how. These systems can also work along side fire alarm systems. If a fire alarm is triggered then the door can be set to auto open.

There are many other systems that use your existing data cabling and with new standards being released like Category 6a and Category 7a you can be expecting speeds up to 40G at the desktop before you know it.
