In this article I am going to teach you about writing copy for the web. This is not an easy process and there are many things you need to learn to do it well. So we will start off with an overview and some basics.
Many folks look at copy writing for the web the same as writing a paper in language arts classes. Well, it's not the same. Writing effective web copy is hard, it is hard to learn and it can take a long time to become effective at it. Writing and practicing is great, but you really need to learn the basics first.
One aspect of web copy is that you are trying to sell something. Whether it is a physical product, a new service or a manual about copy writing, you need to put passion into your copy.
Putting passion into your words is great but you still need to learn to sell more than just the product itself, you will need to learn to sell the idea of your product. Learn to understand what it is about your product that is so great that everyone will be helped by having it. Learn to sell that idea with passion and you will have written effective web copy.
So there are a few things you must understand about writing copy for the web.
Learn to sell the idea
Write with passion about your idea
Focus your writing on a small group of buyers
Create good quality content
Keep it short
Ok, there are a lot more things to learn and understand about website copy writing but that is plenty to get you started.
Focus In On Your Target
You should try to determine the smallest focus group that you can for your product. What problem does that group need a solution for? Does your product provide that solution?
If you try to write to a general audience you will lose most of them before they even read the headline. Folks on the internet are looking for specific solutions to specific problems. They don't want general ideas anymore.
Good Content is Still King
Another aspect of good website copy is that you must have good content in it. If you just ramble on mindlessly about a subject you will quickly lose your audience, and your buyers.
Remember, web buyers don't want a lot of copy. They want to know the best way to solve a problem, and they want it in concise, short words. Most likely you are not writing an engineering white paper on the characteristics of thermal noise effects on radar image dispersal using conical horn antennas. See there how I almost lost you.
Keep the copy on subject and let them know the answer quickly. Using bulleted lists, break out your content with headings and sub headings that describe what is in the next paragraph.
Keep it Short and To the Point
Not only is having good quality content a must, you also need to keep that content short and to the point. Good effective web copy is not like writing an engineering paper or even like your papers for high school composition class. Your prospective buyers don't have time to spend reading for hours, they need the answer quickly.
