3 Reason To Keep Your Web Copy Short

This article is about writing website copy and why you should keep it short. The reason I am writing this is because I have heard from some folks asking how to write effective website copy.
Writing effective website copy is a skill that you can learn. It isn't necessarily an easy skill to learn but you can learn it if you understand the fundamentals. Websites that have copy that is written in concise, to the point formats often do much better at converting visitors than those that ramble on.
1. Walls of Text Are Hard to Read
One of the worst things that you can do as a website copy writer is not pay attention to how your paragraphs are formatted. A web page that has text sprawled from border to border with long lines, short spacing between lines and paragraphs that look like a solid object are what is referred to as a wall of text. This is a sure way to chase off your visitors.
Keeping your paragraphs and sentences short makes the copy much easier to read. Think about the last webpage you went to. Was it formatted with larger font, spaced evenly, narrow columns? If so you probably stayed there and read through it all. Unless the words just didn't' reach out to you.
Break up your paragraphs, even if your topic takes several sentences to complete. Break it up after every two to three sentences. Look for a logical breaking point at the end of a sentence and hit the enter key twice to start a new paragraph. You will find the copy is much easier to read and visitors will stay on the page much longer.
2. Website Visitors Are In A Hurry
Back in the days of Aristotle, or Newton, or even Ben Franklin, time was not so much of an issue as it is in today's society. Those guys could spend 15 years working on a single math problem or writing a manuscript. People didn't have deadlines like you do today.
Visitors to your sales page today are in a hurry. They may only have 15 minutes left on their lunch break and want to find a solution to their dog potty problems. They need the answer right now. If your website doesn't provide at least the promise of that solution above the fold, and in a quick and concise manner they will jump to the next website in the click of their mouse.
3. We Are in the Instant Information Society
Today folks want things right now. It doesn't matter if it is a gallon of milk from the grocery, or a gourmet hamburger at the restaurant, they are accustomed to having it almost instantly. Why do you think the drive through is so profitable these days?
The last generation or two of folks have grown up with a lot of technology. This technology has provided instant gratification to them. They have become basically spoiled by this technology. They have no clue, and don't care how much work is actually involved in getting that gallon of milk to the store. They just want to grab it and go.
So goes with getting the information they are searching for, or the solution to their dog potty problems. These solution seekers know there is a lot of information literally at their fingertips and they will not spend a lot of time reading through a multi-page article to find the answer they seek. Learning how to provide this information quickly will turn you into a great website copywriter.
