Getting Your Heavy Vehicle Licence

There is no doubt, that having a Heavy Vehicle licence will open the door to some great opportunities, in the transport industry. As a driver training school, we see lots of people come through our class rooms, from all walks of life. Some are looking for that change in their career, some are young and just starting out.

If you are wanting to upgrade your current licence to a Heavy Vehicle licence (class LR, MR, HR, HC), you have to pass a practical driving test. Hey don’t worry that’s what we are here for, to ensure that you are competent behind the wheel of a Heavy Vehicle.

If you only hold a car or motorbike (class C, RE or R) then you will need to pass a written Heavy Vehicle road rules test. Sorry that one is up to you, yes you will need to study, but the questions, aren’t really that hard.

Here’s an example of a current Heavy Vehicle Licence question

When traveling outside a built up area and not in a road train area what is the minimum distance to be maintained between long vehicles?

10 meters for every 10 kilometers per hour you are traveling

60 meters

100 meters

Explanation:

The driver of a long vehicle must drive at least 60m behind another long vehicle when traveling on a single lane road outside a built up area. In road train areas the minimum following distance is 200m.

You need to choose your test vehicle

When you go for your driving test, you need to be driving a vehicle that is in line with the type of vehicle that licence class you are applying for. So if your going for a Class LR Licence (bus less then 4.5T GVM, which is designed for carry 12 adult or more, including the driver). You can’t turn up in your car, and expect to be able to be tested for the LR licence.
